The Fire Service Adventure Crew program is through the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) and sponsored by the Hope Mills Fire Department. The program is for young adults, both male and female typically between the ages of 14 and 18. The program teaches teenagers about careers in the fire service, citizenship and community service. Although not every individual who participates in this program will become a future firefighter, they do obtain a better understanding of fire department operations, teamwork and responsibility. Adventure Crew members are not junior firefighters.
Adventure Crew 21 is authorized to have up to 10 members and typically meet the 2nd and 4th Saturday of every month. The Adventure Crew has its own rank structure and they help firefighters on duty at the station. Adventure Crew members are allowed to ride on fire apparatus to certain types of incidents and participate in limited fireground activities. They are not allowed to actively participate in fire suppression, hazardous materials or rescue operations.
Adventure Crew members must provide the crew adviser a copy of their school progress reports and report cards. Adventure Crew members are required by this department to maintain as a minimum a “C” average in all subjects. An Adventure Crew member, who fails to maintain at least a "C" average, will be placed on a “suspended” or inactive status until the minimum grade is achieved.
Due to the training our Adventure Crew members have received and their proficiency in the skills they have learned, crew members have competed aginst firefighters from all over the state and have won 2nd and 3rd place trophies at firefighter competitions.
